Abstract

The invention comprises 3-keto-17b -hydroxy-17a -vinyl-D 5(10)-estrene and the preparation thereof by reacting 3-methoxy-17b -hydroxy-17a -vinyl-D 1,3,5-estatriene with a 200% excess of sodium, potassium or lithium amide in liquid ammonia, reducing the resulting 3-methoxy-17b -hydroxy-17a -vinyl-D 1,3,5- estatriene in which the hydrogen atoms attached to C21 and in the 17b -OH group are replaced by sodium, potassium or lithium by adding lithium and ethanol, and hydrolysing the reaction product with oxalic or acetic acid in methanol or ethanol solution. The invention also includes a process for the preparation of 17a -vinyl-19-nor-testosterone by a process similar to the one above except that the final hydrolysis step is carried out with hydrochloric acid in methanol or ethanol solution. Detailed examples are given.
