Abstract
Acetyl acetone is produced by the reaction of acetone, ethylacetate and an alkali alcoholate at a raised temperature, in which acetone, preferably together with ethyl acetate, is gradually added to a mixture of an alkali alcoholate and ethyl acetate, and, as soon as the temperature reaches the boiling point the alcohol is distilled together with acetone so that a mixture of alcohol, ethyl acetate and a small quantity of acetone passes over, while an alkali acetylacetone and, when present, an alkali ethyl aceto-acetate remains behind. The reaction is preferably commenced at a temperature of 30-50 DEG C. with the introduction of part of the acetone. Only small amounts of by-products such as mesityl oxide, acetyl-mesityl oxide and the like are formed. The process may be conducted under superatmospheric pressure and/or a solvent may be added. Methyl acetate may be used instead of ethyl acetate. In the examples, a mixture of acetone and ethyl acetate was gradually added to a mixture of sodium alcoholate and ethyl acetate to give a mixture of sodium acetyl-acetone and sodium ethyl aceto-acetate.
