Abstract
2 : 4 : 5 - Trichlorophenoxyalkyl carboxylic acids and their esters and salts are made by chlorinating a 2 : 5-dichlorophenoxyalkyl carboxylic acid or an ester or salt thereof, suitably by introducing chlorine into a solution of the starting material in acetic acid or nitrobenzene. The esters and salts of 2 : 4 : 5-trichlorophenoxyalkyl carboxylic acids may also be made by first preparing the free acid as above and subsequently converting to the ester or salt. The starting material may conveniently be made by converting hexachlorocyclohexane into 1 : 2 : 4-trichlorobenzene, treating this with alcoholic alkali metal hydroxide to give 2 : 5-dichlorophenol and reacting the latter with a monohalogenated alkylcarboxylic acid or an ester or salt thereof to give the 2 : 5-dichlorophenoxyalkyl carboxylic acid or its ester or salt. In examples: (1) 2 : 5-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid is chlorinated in acetic acid to give 2 : 4 : 5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid; (2) the process of (1) is repeated using nitrobenzene in place of acetic acid; (3) the ethyl ester of 2 : 5-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid is chlorinated to give the ethyl ester of 2 : 4 : 5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid, and (4) 1-(21 : 51-dichlorophenoxy) - 1 - methylpropionic acid is chlorinated to 1-(21 : 41 : 51 - trichlorophenoxy)-1-methylpropionic acid.
