Abstract

Halogenated alcohols are produced from the corresponding halogenated aldehydes by treating a solution of the halogenated aldehyde in a primary alcohol with an alcoholate or a halogenated alcoholate of aluminium or mixtures thereof. According to the example, a solution of chloral in alcohol is heated to boiling with aluminium ethylate, while hydrogen or other inert gas is continuously passed through; after distilling off the alcohol and adding dilute sulphuric acid to the remainder, trichloroethyl alcohol is obtained by steam distillation. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the use of aluminium alcoholate to which aluminium chloride has been added; an example is given of the conversion of butylchloral into trichlorbutyl alcohol, whilst bromal and monochlorocrotonaldehyde are mentioned as starting materials. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
