Abstract

Solvents, such as are used in dry-cleaning, are regenerated by treating with about 0,05 per cent of anhydrous or concentrated acid, and after separation of the flocculated material neturalizing the free acid in the purified solvent. A used petroleum distillate is agitated with 0,05 per cent of concentrated sulphuric or phosphoric acid, or hydrochloric acid gas, and the flocculated material separated by sedimentation, centrifuging, or filtration. The supernatant solvent is then treated with ammonia or filtered through an alkaline bed, e.g. quicklime, or caustic soda or potash, or sodium carbonate to which may be added an inert filtering agent, e.g. fuller's earth or sand. The acid sludge formed in the first stage in the process may be treated with alkali and steam-distilled to recover solvent therefrom, or the sludge may be used to accelerate flocculation in a further batch of solvent.
