Abstract

505,178. Purifying silica. HOOLEY, T. E., and REYNOLDS, W. H. Nov. 2, 1937, No. 29882. [Class 1 (ii)] Silica sandstone or silica sands are purified by subjecting the material to a hot aqueous acid treatment followed by a hot aqueous alkali, treatment. As an initial step the material may be washed and screened to a suitable grain size. The acid treatment may be effected in leadlined, steam-jacketed vats by means of aqueous sulphuric acid with mechanical agitation at the boiling point. Hydrochloric acid or other acids or ammonium, sodium or other chlorides may be added to the sulphuric acid. The acid treatment may be followed by a filtering and washing step. The alkali treatment may be carried out with aqueous sodium carbonate. The material is then again filtered and washed. The sand may then be subjected to a second hot acid treatment followed by neutralization of any acid present by means of alkali, washing and drying. The acid or alkali recovered from tHe material after the treatments and the acid or alkaline washing waters may be recirculated in the process.
