Abstract

Water is softened by treatment with a mixture containing caustic alkalies, alkaline carbonates and borates, and alkaline salts of acids insoluble in water which dissociate to a high degree in water, for example silicates, aluminates and alumino-silicates. Clay, casein or mucilaginous substances may be added if it is desired to use the mixture in the form of a paste or solid. The sediment separated from the treated water may be used for scouring purposes.
