Abstract

257,774. Hammond, G. Nov. 5, 1925. Pulp, preparation of.-Newspaper or other paper having a pigment applied thereto is reclaimed by reducing the paper to pulp and removing the pigment therefrom and then mixing the pulp with an alkali acid sulphite at a temperature below 110‹ F. Prior to treating with the sulphite the pulp may be treated with a caustic soda solution, also at a temperature of 110‹ F., the amount of caustic soda used being approximately 2.5 per cent by weight of the paper treated. The alkali acid sulphite is preferably added in excess of that required to neutralize the alkalinity of the pump, the resulting pulp being washed to remove the excess sulphite.
