Abstract
In purifying benzole by treatment with a solution of caustic soda or potash in methyl alcohol or with methyl alcohol and solid alkali, separation of the treating agents from the benzole is effected by adding water in quantity not more than the volume of methyl alcohol and the aqueous liquid is treated to separate methyl alcohol and carbon bisulphide. The aqueous liquid is neutralized with dilute mineral acid preferably by pouring it into the acid or with sulphur dioxide, and is passed into a still fitted with a column. The first runnings consisting of a constant boiling mixture of carbon bisulphide and methyl alcohol boiling at about 36--37 DEG C. are collected under water. Carbon bisulphide forms a lower layer and the upper layer of aqueous methyl alcohol is returned to the still. The receiver is changed at about 60 DEG C. when all the carbon bisulphide has distilled, and concentrated methyl alcohol distils over. The carbon bisulphide is purified by washing with dilute alkali, water, and dilute sulphuric acid.ALSO:In purifying benzole by treatment with a solution of caustic soda or potash in methyl alcohol, separation of the treating agents from the benzole is effected by adding water in amount not more than the methyl alcohol, and the aqueous liquid is treated to separate carbon bisulphide and methyl alcohol.
