Abstract
A mixture of alkali oxalate, alkaline earth hydroxide, and water is agitated in a closed vessel and treated with carbon monoxide, or gases containing carbon monoxide, preferably under pressure and at temperatures above 100 DEG C.; the alkaline earth oxalate is separated from the solution of alkali formate produced and the latter evaporated and converted by heat into alkali oxalate for use in the first stage of the process. In an example the treatment of a mixture of sodium oxalate and calcium hydroxide is described. Oxalic acid is obtained by treating the alkaline earth oxalate with sulphuric acid. In the conversion of alkali formate to oxalate, the former may be first melted at 270 DEG C. and then run into a decomposition vessel preheated to 440 DEG C., agents for increasing the yield being added if desired. In order to economize lime and sulphuric acid the sodium oxalate may be first freed from sodium carbonate by any known means, for example by washing with water; the solution of sodium carbonate so obtained may be treated with the necessary quantity of lime and then with carbon monoxide to yield further formate and oxalate.
