Abstract

Water soluble potassium and/or sodium ferrocyanides are obtained free from insoluble cyanides in the purification of coal gas from hydrocyanic acid by washing the gas with a suspension of divalent iron compounds in an excess of alkali lye, such as alkali hydroxide or carbonate, the coal gas freed from tar and ammonia but containing carbon dioxide and hydrocyanic acid being washed according to the counter current principle and the excess alkali which is converted into carbonate or bicarbonate being used again in making up fresh wash liquor. The divalent iron compounds may be obtained by the reaction of ferrous sulphate or chloride with milk of lime, soda, or ammonia preferably at a temperature of 80-90 DEG C. The spent liquor is filtered hot and concentrated for the crystallization of the ferrocyanides, any bicarbonate present being decomposed with the evolution of carbon dioxide; any thiocyanic acid or sulphuretted hydrogen present is also driven off in the concentration. The mother liquor from the crystallization consisting principally of alkali carbonate is returned to the process. Specifications 10876/02, 26566/02, [both in Class 1, Acids, alkalies, &c.], 109,254 and 181,719, [both in Class 1 (ii), Inorganic compounds, other than &c.], are referred to.
