Abstract
321,843. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Nov. 26, 1928. Sulphinic acids are prepared by causing sulphur dioxide to act on open chain aliphatic or cycloaliphatic saturated hydrocarbons in the presence of an anhydrous halide of aluminium or boron, preferably at pressures above atmospheric pressure and at elevated temperature. Mixtures of hydrocarbons such as benzine, ligroin and the like are particularly suitable. The Specification gives an example in which sulphur dioxide is forced into a mixture of 100 parts by weight of n-pentane and 50 parts anhydrous aluminium chloride until the pressure reaches 25 atmospheres. The whole is then warmed to 50-60 Centigrade. The product is precipitated with caustic soda. The sodium salt of the sulphinic acid, which forms colourless crystals, is worked up in the usual manner and the free n-pentane sulphinic acid is liberated with sulphuric acid and extracted with ether. A further example gives the preparation of cyclohexane sulphinic acid from cyclohexane, sulphur dioxide and aluminium chloride.
