Abstract
Coal-tar naphtha, gas-works' benzol, and other mixtures of hydrocarbons are freed from resin-forming constituents and have their aromatic content increased by stirring into the mixture, freed from bases, phenols, and naphthalene by the usual acid, alkali, and distillation treatment, pulverized potassium dichromate, then concentrated sulphuric acid, then dichromate, and so on. 2-10 Gm. of dichromate per litre of hydrocarbon, and 1,25 cc. of 66 DEG B<\>ae. acid per gm. of dichromate, added in 8 doses of each is suitable. After decantation from sludge, the mixture is washed with water and a 1 per cent solution of sodium carbonate, preferably at 50-60 DEG C., and distilled. The known treatment with chromic acid mixture is referred to.
