Abstract

255,777. Schlamp, H. March 30, 1926. Mineral and tar oils, purifying.-In the treatment of the product containing benzol and its homologues. naphthalene &c., formed in the recovery of by-products from the distillation or degasification of coal, peat &c.. or of the corresponding product obtained in the treatment of crude petroleum, with concentrated sulphuric acid and a neutralizing-medium. the heat of reaction of the acid and the neutralizing-medium is utilized to effect distillation of the lighter hydrocarbons. Preferably the phenol and pyridine are first removed respectively by soda lye and dilute sulphuric acid. Sulphurous acid may replace the concentrated sulphuric acid used, and ammonia,. caustic alkalies, or alkali carbonates be used as the neutralizing-medium, the carbon dioxide evolved when a carbonate is used being passed to the phenol-containing soda lye to extract the phenol. The reaction is carried out in a vessel provided with stirring-mechanism and connected to a condenser, and after the removal of the tighter hydrocarbons, the contents are allowed to settle, whereby a lower layer consisting of salts of sulphuric acid. a middle layer consisting of fluid resins insoluble in the treated product; and an upper layer consisting of a solution of resins in the treated product, is obtained. The upper layer is distilled to separate the volatile hydrocarbons from the resins.
