Abstract

Thioindigo dyestuffs are prepared by condensing 4 : 7-dichlor-5-methyl-3-hydroxythionaphthene with an isatin a -derivative. The dyestuffs may be halogenated. 4 : 7-Dichlor-5-methyl-3-hydroxythionaphthene may be prepared by converting, according to Specification 281,290, 2 : 5-dichlortoluene into 2 : 5-dichlor-4-methylphenyl-1-thioglycollic acid by way of the sulphochloride. The hydroxythionaphthene is obtained by ring closure. In examples: (1) 4 : 7-dichlor-5-methyl-3-hydroxythionaphthene is added to a solution of 5-bromisatinchloride in chlorbenzene; (2) 4-methyl-5-chlor-7-methoxyisatin-a -chloride, prepared in solution in chlorbenzene is condensed with 4 : 7-dichlor-5-methyl-3-hydroxythionaphthene.
