Abstract
Indiarubber is converted into resinous substances by heating to 200-270 DEG C. in presence of porous, surface-active substances having a slightly acid reaction, such as active carbon and bleaching earths. They are highly reactive, and may be hydrogenated, vulcanized, or converted into water-soluble sulphonic acids by treatment with chlorsulphonic acid in presence of ethyl ether.ALSO:Resinous substances are obtained by heating rubber to 200-270 DEG C. in presence of porous, surface-active substances having a slightly acid reaction. Suitable substances are active carbon and bleaching earths, particularly "Tonsil A.C." Organic solvents such as ethyl ether, cyclohexanone, and decahydronaphthalene may be added to the rubber before treatment. The conversion products are suitable for the preparation of coating compositions, adhesives, &c. They are highly reactive, and may be hydrogenated, sulphonated, or vulcanized.
