Abstract

1 : 4 - Diketo - 5 - alkyl - 1 : 4 : 5 : 8 : 9 : 10 - hexahydronaphthylenes are obtained by reacting benzoquinone with a diene R-CH= CH-CH=CH2 (R=alkyl) in acetic acid at about 50 DEG C. An example is given of the reaction using piperylene to give 1 : 4-diketo-5-methyl - 1 : 4 : 5 : 8 : 9 : 10 - hexahydronaphthalene with M.P. 146-147 DEG C. Specification 677,442 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the use of a diene RR1C= CH-CH=CH2, where R and R1 are monovalent groups or one may be hydrogen. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
