Abstract

A plastic composition for submarine cable insulation comprises (1) one or more rubber derivatives resulting from the exothermic reaction with rubber of a sulphonic compound having the grouping R - SO2 - X wherein R represents an organic radical or hydroxy group, and X represents a hydroxy group or chlorine; and (2) 10-50 per cent of guttapercha, balata, &c. deresinated or not. Various minor constituents such as antiagers &c. may be included. The proteins present in the raw rubber are broken down wholly or in part by the treatment with the sulphonic compound, to water soluble products which may be washed out. United States Specification 1,605,180 is referred to.
