Abstract

Polynuclear compounds are prepared by fusing a "mono- or di-ketone of the anthracene series" with a metallic halide condensing agent, e.g. aluminium chloride or sodium-aluminium chloride, preferably in presence of an oxidizing-agent such as manganese dioxide, potassium chlorate, oxygen or air. A "mono-or di-ketone of the anthracene series" describes a - monoaroylanthracenes, a . a - diaroylanthracenes and a . meso - diaroylanthracenes. These starting materials are prepared by converting the corresponding acids to the acid chlorides and condensing these with an aromatic hydrocarbon in presence of a metal halide condensing agent. The 1.10-diaroylanthracene is obtained by treating the 1-aroylanthracene with benzoyl chloride in presence of aluminium chloride. In examples: (1) 1.4-anthracene dicarboxylic acid is treated with phosphorus pentachloride and then with benzene in presence of aluminium chloride; the resulting 1.4-diaroylanthracene is condensed with sodium aluminium chloride in presence of oxygen to give a pyrene - quinone derivative; (2) 1.5-anthracene dicarboxylic acid (prepared by reducing the 1.5-anthraquinone dicarboxylic acid with zinc and ammonia) is treated with phosphorus pentachloride and then with benzene as in (1); the 1.5-diaroyl body so obtained is condensed by means of aluminium chloride in presence of manganese dioxide to give a dibenzperylenequinone (dyes reddish violet); (3) a -anthracene carboxylic acid is treated with phosphorus pentachloride in benzene, aluminium chloride added and the mass heated to 50 DEG C. to give 1-benzoylanthracene; this is further condensed in nitrobenzene and in presence of aluminium chloride with benzene at 60 DEG C. and the resulting 1.10-dibenzoylanthracene heated with sodium aluminium chloride at 160--180 DEG C., if desired in presence of oxidizing agents to give probably a mixture of a pyrenequinone and a perylenequinone.
