Abstract

Brown vat dyestuffs are obtained by treating with an acid condensing agent, such as aluminium chloride or concentrated sulphuric acid, the vat-dyes obtained according to Specification 299,972, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], by treating with an alkaline condensing agent a glyoxal-dianthraquinone compound of the general formula:-- <PICT:0369765/IV/1> The same products may also be obtained by treating the above glyoxal-dianthraquinones, without a preliminary alkali-condensation, with an acid condensing agent such as aluminium chloride. The reaction may advantageously be carried out in the presence of an indifferent diluent and of a suitable oxidizing agent, such as manganese dioxide, ferric chloride, halogen or the like; halogen atoms may thus be introduced into the molecule. In examples, (1) the condensation product of glyoxal and anthrone (of example 1 of Specification 299,972) with aluminium-sodium chloride and manganese dioxide, are heated together for a period depending upon the temperature attained; ferric chloride may also be added; (2) the condensation product from 2-chloranthrone and glyoxal is heated with sodium-aluminiumchloride and manganese dioxide; or instead of adding manganese dioxide, chlorine or air may be led through the reaction mass; the condensation products from 2-methyl- or -2-phenylanthrone and glyoxal may also be converted by such treatment; (3) the condensation product from 2 : 6-dichloranthrone and glyoxal is heated together with sodium-aluminium-chloride and manganese dioxide; (4) the condensation product from anthrone and glyoxal is subjected to alcoholic potash fusion and the product heated with sodium-aluminium chloride; the condensed product from 2-chloranthrone and glyoxal first alkali-fused may similarly be treated, or better heated in concentrated sulphuric acid; (5) the condensation product from glyoxal and anthrone is alkali-fused and then heated in concentrated sulphuric acid; the product is more or less sulphonated, such sulphonation being decreased by the presence of sodium sulphate; zinc chloride may be used instead of sulphuric acid as condensing agent.
