Abstract
A salt of a halogen phthalic acid is treated with sulphuric or hydrochloric acid, preferably in theoretical amount, and heated to obtain a sulphate or chloride and the corresponding halogen phthalic anhydride. In order to avoid unnecessary evaporation, it is preferred to use the concentrated acid, so that the strength of the sulphuric acid, for example, should be over 90 per cent. The product obtained in suitable for use in condensation, especially in condensations involving the use of anhydrous aluminium chloride. In examples (1) 45 parts of 100 per cent sulphuric acid are heated to 100 DEG C., and 200 parts of the acid sodium salt of 4-chlorphthalic acid added. The temperature is then raised to 200 DEG C., and held there for several hours, until all the water which is formed has distilled off. The 4-chlorphthalic anhydride may be separated after cooling by extraction with benzene, toluene, solvent naphtha or the like. (2) The acid potassium salt of 3-chlorphthalic acid is heated with sulphuric acid to 150 DEG C., and then to 200 DEG C. (3) The acid potassium salt of 3 : 4-dichlorphthalic acid is heated with sulphuric acid to 160 DEG C., and then to 200 DEG C. (4) The calcium salt of 3 : 6-dichlorphthalic acid is heated at 180 DEG C., and then to 200 DEG C., with sulphuric acid. (5) 111 parts of acid sodium 4-chlorphthalate are heated with 120 parts of 30 per cent hydrochloric acid to 100 DEG C., rising to 160 DEG C., and then to 200 DEG C., and further treated as in example (1).
