Abstract
Light-insensitive titanium pigments are obtained from ilmenite ore such as that occurring in Virginia by extracting the titanium, iron, manganese, and chromium with concentrated sulphuric acid, removing solid matter from the solution by coagulation with gelatin, iron by crystallization, manganese and chromium compounds by adsorption on gypsum or strontium sulphate, and then subjecting the solution to hydrolysis. For the adsorption step not less than 9 per cent by weight of the solution of ground gypsum should be used and it should be stirred in the solution for about twelve hours.
