Abstract

508,715. Obtaining iodine and cellulose from seaweed. DILLON, T., FLOOD, D. T., BARRY, V. C., and O'MUINEACAIN, P. Jan. 20, 1938, No. 1892. Convention date, May 5, 1937. [Class 90] [Also in Group IV] Iodine and other substances are obtained by digesting seaweed with a weak aqueous acid solution, e.g. dilute sulphuric acid, separating the acid extract and treating it, preferably hot, with insoluble copper compounds, e.g. cuprous chloride or cuprous oxide to form copper iodide compounds which are separated by filtration or sedimentation. Iodine is then recovered by known methods. Further acid is added to the liquor remaining and is used for further extraction. When the content of potash and other salts and organic bodies such as mannitol in the liquor becomes too great for useful extraction, such salts &c. may be recovered by any suitable method or the acid content may be neutralized, e.g. with lime and the mass evaporated for use as a fertilizer. The seaweed may be digested in the natural state, or it may be fermented or wetted before it is digested. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes also the subject-matter of Specification 508,671, [Group IV]. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
