Abstract

2-amino-3-substituted-10-anthrones and N-acidyl derivatives thereof are obtained by condensing 31-amino-41-substituted-benzyl-o-benzoic acids and N-acidyl derivatives thereof (Specification 314,804, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.]), to close the ring, producing the 2 : 3 isomer practically free from 4 : 3 isomer. The condensation may be performed in sulphuric acid, oleum, or in acetic acid with dehydrating agents, such as phosphorus pentoxide or penta-chloride. According to examples, (1) the 3-chloro-, -ethoxy-, -methoxy-, derivatives are obtained by condensation of the corresponding 31-amino-41-substituted-benzyl-benzoic acids in sulphuric acid; (2) the N-acetyl-31-amino-41-chloro-benzyl-o-benzoic acid is prepared from the corresponding 31-amino compound and ring-closed with phosphorus pentoxide. N-phthaloyl, and 3-methyl-derivatives of the 10-anthrones are also specified.
