Abstract

1-Amino-4-halogen-9-anthrones.-31-Amino or 31-acidylamino-41-substituted or unsubstituted-61-halogenbenzyl-o-benzoic acids are condensed to effect ring-closure to the 1-amino- or 1-acidylamino-2-substituted or unsubstituted-4-halogen-9-anthrones. As condensing agents may be used concentrated sulphuric acid, phosphorus pentoxide in a solvent such as acetic acid, or phosphorus pentachloride in a solvent such as toluene. In examples (1) 31-acetylamino-41-methoxy-61-chlorobenzyl-o -benzoic acid is condensed to 1-acetylamino-2-methoxy-4-chloro-9-anthrone; this may be hydrolysed to the corresponding amino body or oxidized to 1-acetylamino-2-methoxy-4-chloranthraquinone: (2) 31 - acetylamino - 41 - methoxy-61-bromobenzyl-o-benzoic acid is condensed to 1-acetylamino-2-methoxy-4-bromo-9-anthrone which may be hydrolysed to the free amino derivative or oxidized to the 1-acetylamino-2-methoxy-4-bromoanthraquinone: (3) 31-acetylamino-41-methyl-61-bromo (and 61-chloro-)-benzyl-o-benzoic acids are condensed to 1-acetylamino-2-methyl-4-bromo- (and 4-chloro-)-9-anthrone which may be hydrolysed to the free amino derivatives or oxidized to the 1-acetylamino-2-methyl-4-bromo-(and 4-chloro-)-anthraquinones: (4) 31-acetylamino-41 , 61-dichlorobenzyl-o-benzoic acid is condensed to 1-acetylamino-2-4-dichloro-9-anthrone which may be hydrolysed to the free amino body. The production of 1-amino-2-ethoxy-4-chloro- and 4-bromo-9-anthrones, and 1-amino-2-halogen-4-bromo-9-anthrone and of the N-acetyl derivatives of these is also mentioned, and also anthrones containing a carboxylic or sulphonic acid group in the 2-position are referred to. When these anthrones are heated to 70-80 DEG C. with sulphuric acid they are converted to highly coloured anthraquinone bodies which dye acetate silk. The starting materials are prepared by the process of Specification 347,171. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) also refers to the hydrolysis of the acetylaminoanthraquinones derived by oxidation of the anthrones prepared according to examples 1, 2, and 3 above but this subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
