Abstract

2 - Hydroxynaphthalene - dicarboxylic acids are made by heating under pressure with carbon dioxide an alkali salt of a 2-hydroxynaphthalenemonocarboxylic acid containing the carboxyl group in the non-hydroxylated nucleus, the second carboxyl group entering the 3-position. The products are dyestuff intermediates. In examples, the dipotassium salts of 2-hydroxy-naphthalene-5-, 6-, and 7-carboxylic acids, and the disodium salt of 2-hydroxynaphthalene-5-carboxylic acid are each heated to a temperature of about 250 DEG C. with carbon dioxide under a pressure of 120 atmospheres.
