133. Soc. pour l'Industrie Chimique Ó Bale. Jan. 4, 1909, [Convention date]. Anthranols.-A chloranthranol is obtained by treating with a condensingÀagent, such as'sulphuric acid, the chlorbenzylbenzoic acid made by reducing p-chlorbenzoylbenzoic acid with zinc in presence of alkali ; a methylanthranol is obtained from pmethylbenzylbenzoic acid ; chlormethylanthranols are obtained from the chlormethylbenzylbenzoic acids made by condensing o- or p-chlortoluene with phthalic anhydride and subsequent reduction of the chlortoluylbenzoic acids so formed. The Specification in the original form, as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a), describes also the production of anthranols by treating with condensing-agents substitution derivatives in general of benzylbenzoic acid ; this subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Benzanthrones are obtained by treating with glycerine and a condensing-agent the anthranols prepared as described above, or by directly treating the parent benzylbenzoic acids with glycerine and condensing-agents. Instead of glycerine its anhydrides and ethers may be used, for instance mono-, di-, or epi-chlorhydrin, or acetin. Benzanthrone dyes.-The benzantbrones prepared as described above yield vat dyes on heating with alkali. The products dye cotton blue to violet tints. A sulphurized dye giving brown shades in a vat is obtained by heating the methylbenzanthrone with sulphur. Specification 7022/05 is referred to.
