Abstract

1 : 4 - Dihalogenanthraquinone - 2 - carboxylic acids are obtained by causing ring-closing agents to act upon 2<1> : 5<1>-dihalogenbenzo-phenone-2 : 4<1>-dicarboxylic acids at high temperature. The starting materials may be prepared, for example, by oxidizing the 2<1> : 5<1>-dihalogen-4<1>-alkyl diphenylmethane-2-carboxylic acids of Specification 439,508 by means of potassium permanganate. According to an example, the 2<1> : 5<1>-dichlorobenzophenone-2 : 4<1>-dicarboxylic is ring-closed by means of concentrated sulphuric acid.
