Abstract

Polybasic acids are manufactured by subjecting naphthas hydroformed at a temperature above 900 DEG F. to oxidation, e.g. in vapour phase by the action of air or oxygen in the presence of an oxidation catalyst consisting of vanadium pentoxide, molybdenum oxides, oxides of uranium or of any of the metals of groups V and VI or mixtures thereof, or in liquid phase in the presence of liquid phase oxidation catalysts which should preferably be soluble in the naphtha, e.g. manganese naphthenate or mercury acetate. The starting materials are prepared as described in Specification 477,015, and may be subjected to a preliminary treatment as described therein. In an example, a hydroformed naphtha prepared as described in the example in Specification 477,015, or a fraction thereof, is oxidized by passing its vapour mixed with an equal weight of air over the catalysts specified above at about 200 DEG C., or by treating it in liquid phase with oxygen-containing gases at temperatures at which the oil is liquid, e.g. 140--200 DEG C., if desired in the presence of liquid phase oxidation catalysts. Specification 363,711 also is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the second method for the preparation of the starting materials which is described in Specification 477,015 as open to inspection under Sect. 91. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
