Abstract

Aliphatic acids such as acetic acid are extracted from their aqueous solutions by an aliphatic ketone with or without the addition of a hydrocarbon, and the extract is distilled with the return to the still of the solvent layer of the distillate as described in the parent Specification. Ketones mentioned are methylethyl ketone, diethyl ketone, methyl-isopropyl ketone and light acetone oil. the boiling-point of the ketone is lower than that of the acid to be extracted. In an example, aqueous acetic acid is extracted with a mixture of 80 parts methylethyl ketone with 20 parts benzene. Specifications 283,702, 290,992, and 338,187, [all in Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], are referred to.
