Abstract

A high molecular weight ester having at least 21 carbon atoms in its molecule is derived from a monocarboxylic acid and an aliphatic saturated polyhydric alcohol, the hydroxy groups of which are linked to an uninterrupted hydro-carbon chain, which alcohol has at least 12 carbon atoms in its molecule. In examples of preparation of the esters (1) nonadecane diol and 2-ethyl-hexanoic acid are melted together and treated with dry hydrogen chloride at 200 DEG C.; (2) a diol mixture is prepared by reacting oleic acid with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a cobalt catalyst; the product is dissolved in methanol, mixed with urea and cooled, when solid impurities form and are removed; the purified diol is esterified with 2-ethyl-hexanoic acid, lauric acid, or 9,10-dimethyl-stearic acid; (3) the diol mixture obtained as in (2) is dissolved in methanol and cooled to deposit solid impurities before forming the ester; other suitable low boiling organic solvents are specified; (4) the diol mixture is heated with formic acid in the presence of hydrogen chloride to produce formic acid esters which are reacted with urea in methanol solution; the solid addition products are decomposed with dilute acid and the purified ester saponified and the diol mixture esterified with 2-ethyl-hexanoic acid; acetic acid may be used instead of formic acid. The esters are useful as lubricants stable at high and low temperatures and also as plasticizers and rubber additives.
