Abstract

Fatty acid esters of aliphatic polyhydric alcohols or monosaccharides are made by reacting a fatty acid containing from 8 to 24 carbon atoms in the molecule with a C6 aliphatic alcohol or a C6 monosaccharide in the presence of an acid condensing agent and in the presence of the monomethylamide, dimethylamide, monoethylamide, diethylamide, cyclic internal N-methlyamide, cyclic internal N-ethylamide or unsubstituted amide of an aliphatic carboxylic acid, which amide melts at a temperature below 130 DEG C., or dimethyl sulphoxide or diethyl sulphoxide. Preferred solvents are N,N-dimethylformamide and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone. Suitable fatty acids are lauric, palmitic, oleic and stearic acid. When the fatty acid is not very soluble in the amide, a further solvent, such as dioxane or ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, may be added. Sorbitol and mannitol are suitable alcohols and glucose is a suitable monosaccharide. The condensing agent may be p-toluene sulphonic acid.
