Abstract
Diresorcyl sulphide (4:41-thiobisresorcinol) is made by reacting sulphur dichloride or a solution of sulphur dichloride in an alkyl ester of a fatty acid containing up to 4 carbon atoms, said alkyl group in the ester containing up to 5 carbon atoms, with a solution of resorcinol in said ester at a temperature not above 15 DEG C., neutralizing the reaction solution with an aqueous alkali-metal carbonate solution, separating the ester layer, removing the ester therefrom by distillation at a temperature of 20 DEG to 60 DEG C., and crystallizing the diresorcyl sulphide from water. The preferred molecular ratio of resorcinol to sulphur dichloride is about 2:1. Alkyl esters specified are methyl butyrate, ethyl formate, acetate, propionate and butyrate, propyl acetate, isopropyl acetate and isoamyl acetate and butyrate. An example is given.
