Abstract

Methyl chloroform is stabilized against metal catalysed decomposition for use as a metal degreasing solvent by the incorporation of a minor amount, usually 0.5-6% by weight, of an aliphatic hydroxy carboxylic acid and/or an alkyl ester thereof. Suitable acids are those having up to 4 carbon atoms in the molecule, while suitable esters are the methyl and ethyl esters; the preferred compounds are a -hydroxyisobutyric acid and the methyl ester thereof. The composition desirably also contains 0.5-2% of a C1- 3-nitroalkane.
