Abstract

An ointment base consists of esters derived by reacting a saturated aliphatic di or polyhydric alcohol with a mixture of saturated fatty acids containing at least one fatty acid of 8 to 12 carbon atoms and at least one fatty acid of 18 to 22 carbon atoms. Specified alcohols are propylene glycol, glycerine, pentaerythritol and sorbitol. The ratio of the C8-C12 fatty acid component to the C18-C22 fatty acid component is preferably 1 : 1 to 3 : 1. Other additives include hormones, e.g. hydrocortisone, vitamins, salicylic acid, bacteriostatic agents, disinfectants, ascerophtol palmitate, aureomycinhydrochloride coal tar solution, hexachlorophene or ammoniated mercury.
