Abstract

Higher fatty acid salts of neomycin are produced by reacting in stoichiometrically equivalent proportions neomycin base and an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid containing 8 to 18 carbon atoms in methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol or a mixture thereof. The pH of the reaction mixture is preferably 6.5-7.5 and the alcoholic solvent may contain up to 20% water. Specified salts are neomycin pelargonate, palmitate, undecylerate and caprylate. The neomycin higher fatty acid salts are used in ointments, lotions, creams or soap bases for topical application.
