Abstract

Cysteine methyl ester hydrochloride is prepared by reacting cysteine hydrochloride with at least 4 molecular equivalents of methyl alcohol in the presence of hydrochloric acid. In an example, the reaction is effected at the boiling point while passing hydrogen chloride through the mixture. The product can be purified by recrystallization from methyl alcohol, from a mixture of methyl alcohol with dry ethyl acetate or dry ethyl ether or from dioxane, either mixed with a small amount of water alone or with a small amount of water and methanol. The free base can be liberated and converted to the neutral sulphate.ALSO:The invention comprises a therapeutic composition consisting of a buffered aqueous solution of cysteine methyl ester hydrochloride. A suitable aqueous buffer solution is one which by itself has a pH of 7, such as is obtained by dissolving citric acid and disodium phosphate in water. The preparation of the pure ester-salt is described (see Group IV (b)).
