Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0837879/IV (b)/1> (R1 is an alkyl group of 1-5 carbons, R2 and R3 are hydrogen or an alkyl group of 1-5 carbons), their salts, and their preparation by esterifying an alkyl reserpate with a benzoic acid of general formula <FORM:0837879/IV (b)/2> (wherein R4 and R5 represent alkyl groups of 1-5 carbon atoms or carbonic acid ester radicals) or a functional acid derivative thereof, and in any resulting diesters with carbonyloxy groups, the latter are converted to hydroxy groups, e.g. by catalytic hydrogenation or mild alkaline hydrolysis. Detailed examples illustrate the preparation of O-(21,51-dimethoxybenzoyl) reserpic acid methyl ester and of the corresponding 21,51-dihydroxy compound.
