Abstract
A fatty acid ester of a hexahydric alcohol or monosaccharide is made by reacting a hexahydric alcohol or monosaccharide with a fatty acid ester of a C1-C5 aliphatic, monohydric alcohol, the reaction being carried out in the presence, as a solvent, of N-monoethylformamide, N-dimethylformamide, N-monoethylformamide, N-diethylformamide, dimethyl sulphoxide, and those monoethylamides, dimethylamides, monoethylamides and diethylamides of aliphatic carboxylic acids containing at least 2 carbon atoms in the molecule and cyclic internal N-methylamides and N-ethylamides of aliphatic carboxylic acids which melt at a temperature below 130 DEG C., e.g. N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone. The reaction may be effected in the presence of an alkaline condensing agent e.g. an alkali metal carbonate or a basic ion exchange resin, preferably at a temperature not exceeding 100 DEG C. The fatty acid radicals preferably contain at least 8 carbon atoms, e.g. lauric, palmitic, oleic or stearic. Sorbitol, mannitol, glucose and fructose are suitable hydroxy compounds. The solubility of the ester may be improved by adding dioxane or ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, and the solubility of the hexahydric alcohol or polysaccharide may be improved by adding formamide.
