Abstract

A process for the manufacture of a N-acyl-b -amino propionic acid comprises (a) reacting equivalent amounts of an acrylic acid ester and a carboxylic acid amide, the amide group of which contains at least one nitrogen-bonded hydrogen atom, at a temperature from 20 DEG to 120 DEG C. and in the presence of, as catalyst, an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt of the amide, (b) hydrolyzing the ester that is formed by treating it with an alkaline solution in the presence of an aliphatic alcohol that contains from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and (c) treating the resulting salt with a mineral acid to liberate the N-acyl-b -aminopropionic acid. Examples describe the preparation of N-oleyl-N-methyl-, N-acetyl-N-oleyl-, o-sec-butylphenoxy-acetyl-N-methyl-, and N-stearyl-N-methyl-b -aminopropionic acids, and of N-acyl-N-methyl propionic acids wherein the acyl groups are derived from a mixture of coconut oil or soybean oil acids.
