Abstract
Ammonium bisulphate is formed in a process for the production of a substantially anhydrous lower fatty acid having up to 6 carbon atoms in the molecule (see Group IV(b) by the liquid phase hydrolyiss of the corresponding nitrile in the presence of 1 mole of anhydrous sulphuric acid and 2 moles of water per mole of nitrile. The ammonium bisulphate may be neutralized with ammonia to give ammonium sulphate. In Example 1 the ammonium bisulphate product is diluted with sulphuric acid before saturation with ammonia to give ammonium sulphate.ALSO:A substantially anhydrous lower fatty acid having up to 6 carbon atoms in the molecule is produced by liquid phase hydrolysis of a lower fatty acid nitrile having the same number of carbon atoms in the presence of 1 mole of anhydrous sulphuric acid and 2 moles of water per mole of nitrile. Comparative experiments illustrate the use of phosphoric acid, hydrochloric acid and ammonium bisulphate in place of the sulphuric acid, and the use of the reactants in ratios other than those specified above. Examples describe the preparation of acetic and propionic acids.
