Abstract

Esters of xylitol having surface active properties are made by reacting in liquid phase a glyceride with xylitol in the presence of a carbonate, alkylate or phosphate of an alkali metal as catalyst, at a temperature of from 20 DEG C. to 120 DEG C., and for a period of time from 6 to 12 hours. The reaction may be effected in an inert organic solvent, such as a tertiary aliphatic amine, heterocyclic amine or an amide, N,N-dimethylformamide and dimethyl sulphoxide being preferred. The glycerides may be naturally occurring fatty substances of animal or vegetable origin, or synthetic fatty substances, either hydrogenated or non-hydrogenated. The ester of xylitol may be thereafter condensed with ethylene oxide, preferably at least 15 moles of ethylene oxide per mole of xylitol ester being used. An example describes the reaction of oxen's tallow and xylitol. Cottonseed oil-xylitol, xylitol stearate and palm oil-xylitol are also mentioned.ALSO:A product having good emulsifying properties is made by reacting an ester of xylitol (made by reacting a glyceride with xylitol) with ethylene oxide, the reaction being discontinued when absorption of ethylene oxide by the ester is complete. It is preferable to employ at least 15 moles ethylene oxide per mol of xylitol ester. In examples, oxen's tallow is reacted with xylitol and the product is treated in an autoclave with 30 moles of ethylene oxide per mole of xylitol ester at 90-100 DEG C. in the presence of potassium hydroxide, or with 20 moles of ethylene oxide per mole of xylitol ester at 130 DEG C. in the presence of sodium hydroxide.
