Abstract

Polyethylene terephthalate is made by (1) mixing 1 mol. of purified terephthalic acid with 2-20 mols. of ethylene glycol, (2) increasing the temperature of the mixture to about 220 DEG -240 DEG C. and subjecting it to a pressure of at least 25 p.s.i.g. whilst continuously removing the liberated water, (3) after the evolution of water substantially ceases removing excess glycol from the mixture by distillation and (4) maintaining the resulting mixture at an elevated pressure and under a reduced pressure until a highly polymeric product is obtained. The purified terephthalic acid is that obtained by the processes of either of Specifications 932,245 and 932,246 or that obtained by dissolving crude terephthalic acid in an aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide, adding activated carbon, filtering the solution to remove the carbon and thereafter precipitating the terephthalic acid with hydrochloric acid. The reaction mixture may also include (a) a compound having a sulphonic acid type group as described in Specification 904,445, (b) certain monohydric polyalkylene oxides and hydroxy polyalkylvinyl ethers as well as polyols having a functionality greater than 2 as described in Specification 847,090, or (c) certain high molecular weight aliphatic dicarboxylic acids. In examples these additional compounds were (12) and (14) methoxypolyethylene glycol and pentaerythritol; (13) 1,20-eicosanedioic acid; (15) potassium 3,5-dicarboxybenzene sulphonate.
