Abstract
A process for the manufacture of pure nicotinic acid comprises subjecting a mixture of a nicotinic acid-containing composition with an inert solvent to azeotropic distillation and separating the pure nicotinic acid by crystallization from the mixture of nicotinic acid and the inert solvent which thereby distils over. Suitable solvents are tetrahydronaphthalene, diphenyl, diphenyl ether or mixtures thereof. The nicotinic acid composition may be impure nicotinic acid formed in situ by thermal treatment of a compound capable of being thereby transformed into nicotinic acid, e.g. dicarboxylic acids, such as quinolinic or isocinchomeronic acid. Examples describe (1) the distillation of a mixture of nicotinic acid, diphenyl and diphenyl ether; (2) and (3) the production of nicotinic acid by heating quinolinic acid and isocinchromeronic acid, mixed with diphenyl and diphenyl ether to 130 DEG C. and 210 DEG to 230 DEG C. respectively, followed by azeotropic distillation.ALSO:A process for the manufacture of pure nicotinic acid comprises subjecting a mixture containing nicotinic acid to azeotropic distillation with an inert solvent and separating the pure nicotinic acid by crystallization from the mixture of nicotinic acid and the inert solvent which distils over.
