Abstract

Surfaces in the preparation of patterns, moulds or the like for the manufacture of shaped metal articles are prepared for an electroforming process (see Group XXXVI) by coating a layer of silver obtained by applying to the surface a silver preparation in which the silver is in colloidal form and which is free from natural and artificial resins and resinous compounds and which has been stabilized by organic as distinct from inorganic material and heat-treating the coated surfaces as by storing, e.g. to 110 DEG C. The silver preparation may consist of a substantially non-aqueous colloidal solution containing silver metal, silver oxide and a non-resinous organic stabilizer such as protalbinic acid in a solvent of low volatility which leaves no residue, e.g. ethanolamine, or a 20 per cent aqueous ammonia solution.
