Abstract

506,612. Ornamenting crÛpe paper. DENNISON-VICTOR CO., Ltd. June 2, 1938, No. 16495. Convention date, July 12, 1937. [Class 93] [Also in Group VIII] Decorative sheet material having a surface finish giving variegated effects resembling, for instance, moirÚ fabrics or metal cloth, is made by embossing crÛpe paper and then applying a mass of preferably colourless transparent coating-material containing finely divided highly light-reflective particles, the coating-material being so distributed as to leave on the embossed surface a thin continuous coating of variable thickness dependent on the variations in the sheet produced by embossing. A paper web S, after passing over a crÛpeing roller 2 is embossed by corrugating &c. rollers 6, a coating-composition is applied from a trough 9 the walls of which act as scrapers whereby the composition is scraped off the high parts of the web and settles in the low parts, the material is then dried and is finally passed through apparatus 18 for stretching the material transversely so as to break the coating and expose parts of the original web. Alternatively, the excess may be removed by a spreader bar, rollers or an air blast. The coating- composition may comprise casein, starch, pyroxylin or other cellulose-derivative lacquers, varnish, shellac, or synthetic resins, and the particles may be bronze, gold or silver powders, powdered mica, fish scales or powdered transparent cellulose paper.
