Abstract

953,713. Coating paper webs. BELOIT IRON WORKS. Jan. 16, 1961 [April 4, 1960], No. 1765/61. Heading D1L. A method of improving the surface characteristics of a coated paper web 11 comprises passing the coated web through a narrow nip defined by a hard, smooth, non-resilient large diameter roll 28 and a smaller diameter roll 29 having a metal core and a thin, resilient, hard outer cover, heating the surface of the roll 28 to plasticise the surface of the webb 11 in the nip, and varying the distance between the rolls 28, 29 to form a high, uniformly distributed pressure in the nip. Temperatures of 220‹F to 400‹F. and pressures of 250 to 2400 lbs per square inch are mentioned. The roll 28, which is driven may be chrome-or nickelplated, and heating medium enters the roll 28 through a conduit 31. Variable pressure is applied to the web 11 at two points by rolls 29, 30, which are surfaced with hard rubber and are resiently mounted by means of hydraulically or pneumatically operated pistons 34, 40. The rolls 29, 30 may be cooled. The web 11 is coated by an apparatus which includes a roll 20 and an air knife 22, before passing over drier rolls 26, 27, and the web may follow the roll 28 between the nips 28, 29 and 28, 30, or may be taken round rolls 45, 46 as shown. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the web is coated successively on each side, and after each coating operation the web is dried and passed through an apparatus similar to the parts 28.30, pressure being applied by a hydraulically or pneumatically operated bellows arrangement. The coatings may be continuous or discontinuous and instead of a web, separate sheets may be coated and finished.
