Abstract

939,351. Feeding sheets and webs. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 22, 1961 [Jan. 12, 1961], No. 1410/61. Class 100 (1). [Also in Group VIII] A method of tensioning sheet material in which the material is passed between nip rollers is characterized in that the edges of the material are fed by the rollers at a greater speed than at the centre of the material. As shown, a roller A has a central steel portion 1 and freely rotatable portions 2 surfaced with rubber 2. The roller B has a central portion 3 surfaced with rubber and portions 4 of steel, both rollers having the same diameter when not pressed together. In operation, the roller B rotates faster than roller A, the speed of the material being fed at the centre of the rollers being equal to the peripheral speed of the portion 1, while the speed of the material being fed at the edges of material being greater by reason of the speed of rotation of the roller B. In another embodiment, roller C, Fig. 2, has a convex rubber sleeve 11 and roller D is of steel, either or both rollers being driven. Sleeve 11 has a circumferential cut-out portion 13 connected to a source of pressure or vacuum by a pipe 14. The sleeve 11 mates with the roller 10 when pipe 14 is connected to a pressure source. A reduction in pressure causes contraction of sleeve 11 and therefore a leak to develop between rollers C and 10. In modifications, Figs. 3 and 5 (not shown), rollers of undulating or waisted form, respectively, are provided. Specifications 787,479 and 843,113 are referred to.
