Abstract

1,234,880. Coated products. LONZA Ltd. 9 July, 1969 [12 July, 1968; 21 Feb., 1969], No. 34583/69. Heading B2E. Fibrous products having a coating which is heat-sealable and printable are obtained by applying in one pass to a fibre material a coating stock containing pigment and binder in a weight ratio of 0.8-4.0, the binder being an aqueous dispersion containing at least one natural binder and at least one thermoplastic synthetic resin of particle size 0.2 to 3Á in an amount of more than 20% by weight. Preferred to the total dry binder -, the thermoplastic resin having an ultimate break elongation of at least about 300% and a heat sealing temperature of 7 to 160‹C. The natural binder may be casein, starch or starch products. The thermoplastic synthetic resin may be a copolymer or terpolymer containing vinyl chloride, vinyl esters, vinyl ethers, acrylic acid, acrylic acid esters, methacrylic acid, methacrylic acid esters, maleic acid, maleic acid esters, fumaric acid, fumaric acid esters, isobutylene and ethylene. Fillers may be present such as kaolin, talc, asbestine, gypsum, blanc fixe, magnesite, chalk, titanium dioxide, calcium silicate and kieselguhr. The fibrous base may be of cellulose such as paper, pasteboard, cardboard straw, and wood, or of wax. An adhesion improved may be applied to the coating stock such as rosin, for example, colophony glycerol esters and hydrogenated rosin compounds, coumarone resins, coumarone-indene resins, polyterpene resins and alkyd resins.
