Abstract

1465631 Coated synthetic paper KANZAKI PAPER MFG CO Ltd and TORAY INDUSTRIES INC 18 June 1974 [18 June 1973] 26934/74 Heading D2B [Also in Division B2] Coated paper suitable for offset printing, comprises a base paper sheet comprising fibrous material, at least 5% of which is polyolefinic pulp whose specific surface area is at least 0.7 m<SP>2</SP>/g, the base sheet being coated on at least one surface with a binder component and an organic polymeric pigment, the coating weight being at least 0.5 g/m<SP>2</SP>, and at least 5% of the pigment being organic. Suitable polyolefins include ethylene, propylene, 4- methyl-pentene-1, butene-1 and styrene and copolymers such as ethylene-vinyl acetate, ethylene acrylic acid salt. A hydrophilic component may be included in the pulp, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol, hydrolysed ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, polyvinyl alcohol graft polymerised with styrene or methyl methacrylate, polymers and copolymers of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, buten-tri-carboxylic acid, maleic anhydride, itaconic acid and their partial esters, acrylamide, polyethylene oxide and carboxymethylcellulose. The polyolefinic material may be obtained by emulsion flush spinning, flush spinning, solution shearing, uniaxial stretching and splitting and melt spinning. It may be made into the base sheet by conventional paper making means in conjunction with other forms of pulp, e.g. natural cellulose. Coating may be effected onmachine. Dried, supercalendered paper prepared from varying proportions of polyolefinic pulp containing polypropylene in admixture with bleached softwood kraft pulp and bleached hardwood kraft pulp is coated with 7 g/m<SP>2</SP> (felt side) and 9 g/m<SP>2</SP> (wire side) of a composition containing kaolin, Al(OH) 3 , polystyrene emulsion, oxidised starch and carboxylated styrene butadiene copolymer latex have specified values of density, brightness, opacity and gloss. Their water resistance is also measured. Similar measurements were made on coated paper produced from polyethylene. Many suitable organic pigments are specified and also many inorganic pigments are specified as suitable for inclusion in the coating compositions.
